This website is not related in any way to the phone app, as many people have been saying. I believe this started when the Huffington Post incorrectly... ahem... "reported" this as being a phone app in their article by tagging it with tags like "iphone" and "worst app". This site doesn't use GPS and there is nothing to install.
This website was always meant to be a tool to help people stay safe. Although the original name(Ghetto Tracker) may have been, admittedly, insensitive to some people, the purpose of the site remains the same. If I'm traveling to an unfamiliar area, I would like to get the opinions of the locals as to how safe an area is.
Some people saw the name of the site, used their political ideology as a starting point, knew that ideology tells them they must act offended by a word, and used mental gymnastics to work their way backwards into arguments as ridiculous as this gem:
It’s pretty detrimental to society when we reinforce the idea that poor or crime-heavy areas are places to be categorically avoided or shamed,...
That is a real quote from a blogger. I think most people would rather avoid crime-heavy area, call me crazy, among the other things I've already been called.
This website is not about race or income, as some of the PC myrmidons have asserted. Again, it's about safety. If you don't care about your personal safety, I suggest you not use this site.
This website was not started by a rich, white, 1%er... that's basically the opposite of reality.
